At the keynote session in Leipzig, Crytek CEO and mouthpiece Cevat Yerli revealed that he expects the next generation of consoles to hit in 2011 or so. This really means that the first stages of hardware design are likely in progress, at least at Microsoft and Nintendo. Mostly the paper-only stages, we assume, but you can bet it has begun.

"The PlayStation 4 and Xbox '720' will arrive in 2011 or 2012, we think," said Yerli. "But this is just our estimate - we don't know, and even if Microsoft and Sony told us, I couldn't say because it would be under NDA.

In correspondance between the two, both the EA and TT CEO have agreed that any acquisition agreement would not come before the Holiday season this year. Thusly, they have agreed to let the EA acquisition offer expire for now. This does not mean EA has given up, as you can read.

On a totally different note, just a heads up. DM fell this past week and broke three of his ribs. Because of this, things may move a little slower this week. No, we did not forget about the GR Geometry Wars contest, we will try to verify the scores todday,. Unfortunately, when you have broken ribs, it affects everthing - talking, breathing, moving, and espeically typing. Thanks for understanding.

Acti-Blizz CEO Robert Kotick has responded to Warner Bros. for saying it should receive higher royalties for use of its songs in games like Guitar Hero. Kotick maintains that companies like Warner Bros. are failing to acknowledge the benefits they receive from the exposure and re-exposure of songs from their music catalog to the gaming public. It brings the songs to an audience that may never have listened in the first place. We tend to agree.

"I think his view was...that [Warner Music] should be compensated the way they might for a performance on iTunes. But this is an entirely different business that is very technically complex. We're going to favour those publishers that recognise and appreciate how much we can add value to their artists," said Kotick.

Epic games and EA, of all companies, have entered into a publishing deal for an all-new action title. It is not Gears of War 2 either, apparently. We are not sure what else Epic has up it's sleeves at this point, but we are sure info will begin to be released very soon. EA is like a sieve when it comes to secrets. Despite the reports yesterday from the Evolution of Sega interview/article, it seems Yu Suzuki is still a part of Sega in some form. The interviewee, Sega of America president Simon Jeffery, made a corrective statement today and stated:

"I can safely say that Yu Suzuki is in fact still a Sega employee," said Jeffrey in a corrective statement made to Gamasutra today, adding that Suzuki "...is a Creative Officer of Sega Corp."

It certainly seemed a bit epic to us that the legendary Yu Suzuki had left Sega to tinker on his own. It seems we were right. Good news for all.

Earlier today, Gamasutra reported that Midway was laying off workers. Well, Midway has confirmed layoffs from the Austin studio, and they have also announced the cancellation of an unannounced project. Between 90 and 130 employees will be seeing the dreaded pink slip. This is the first step in Midway';s plans to reduce costs due to poor sales and recent high game costs. The studio itself will remain open, though, to host the company's Central Outsourcing Group, while two teams there will continue work on "unnamed prototype projects" that Midway notes are both new IP. Stay tuned.

Just a quick FYI, folks. The Mythos team, former Flagship Studios guys behind the MMO Mythos, has reformed as Runic games. The dev was caught up in the collapse of the parent company last month, and now that things have settled, they have re-organized. The studio will now be working on unrelated, new MMORPG games. Great news.
