Enemy Territory: Quake Wars

Quake Wars has been out for PC gamers for about 8 months now. When it was released, it received solid reviews, and the fans seemed to support it. Now the game finally comes home to both Xbox360 and PS3. With all the hubbub surrounding the big games released lately, Quake wars is going to have a hard time holding its own. Multiplayer FPS fans are eagerly awaiting Battlefield: Bad Company in a week or two, MGS4 was just released to rave reviews, and Ninja Gaiden 2 is wooing action/hack/slash fans now, as well. This means gamers do not have much money left over at this point. This is truly a shame for id Software, as Quake Wars is not a bad game at all. But, as they say, the devil’s in the details, folks.

For those who are unfamiliar with the Quake Wars game, it is your classic multiplayer FPS setup. Two warring factions are vying for control of the same battlefield. To win, players must complete a series of objectives, be it capturing a control point, or destroying an enemy installation with explosive. As you achieve each objective, more or the battlefield opens up, until you have won or until you have been defeated. Pretty standard stuff here, folks.

The focus of the game is definitely the multiplayer section, but id Software has still included a campaign mode for those who want to familiarize themselves with the game play before they join other humans online. There are twelve maps split up over four different continents. These maps are then split into four groups. Each group gives you a different campaign to complete as either the Strogg enemy or the marine-style GDF forces. I hesitate to call the Campaign mode “story mode” because, as far as I could tell, there really was no story to speak of, and none of the missions seemed linked to each other. It is as if you are playing stand alone bot matches until the day is won. The matches in this mode largely have their fun-factor determined by how well the bot AI plays, which is usually sub-par.

What does separate Quake Wars from other online FPS games is its class system. Or, it was what set it apart if you played the PC version. Unfortunately, it seems id Software decided for some crazy reason to totally omit this ranking schemata from the console versions of the game. No weapon, vehicle, and class-specific rewards are given for completing specific tasks. The developers did try to replace them with attribute boosts that are universal among all classes, but they are generic and mundane, unfortunately. They also did away with the in-depth stat tracking and website support that helped to draw PC players into the game at a much deeper level. I do not even have a guess as to why this was done, or not done as the case may be, other than id having financial concerns since the game was being released amid a slew of much more high-profile titles.

While the supporting details of the class system are gone or replaced with generic console FPS features, at least the classes themselves are well designed and in-tact, more or less. The GDF and Strogg enemies both have their own set of unique classes, and they complement each other well. The abilities differ enough to be interesting, but not enough to be useless. For instance, the Strogg can turn a dead body into a spawn point, or they can add shields to one of their hog vehicles. Intersting abilities, to be sure, but the GDF has their own set of abilities which can counter these, if you try hard enough.
