As I said, item and weapon selection are also PC to console issues. This is usually done with shoulder buttons or the d-pad, and some games do it very well. Quake Wars keeps the generic formula, and uses the shoulder buttons to manage things, with the right handling weapons and the left handling tools/items. It is not as streamlined as using a mouse wheel on the PC, but what is? As I said, this game is built for multiplayer, and to be honest, once you get a few games deep on Xbox Live, you will start to forgive the flaws. The presentation and technical wrapping certainly could have been done better, but after all, this is Quake by id Software originally). That means you are still playing one of the two classic FPS franchises that brought the genre to the forefront of gamers’ minds, oh so many years ago (yes, the other is Unreal, yes I’m old). Of course, and here we go again, the match selection and game location interface could have been done much better, but we have come to expect that from QW: ET by now. The games do require strategic thinking, a decent prowess with a weapon, and they do provide some fun, which is what these games were designed to do in the first place. Quake fans won’t be disappointed too much, but then again, Quake fans have likely been playing this game on PC for a while already. You will notice I have not mentioned the graphics or sound quality of Quake Wars, and there is a reason for that. I am sorry to report that both the sound and graphical quality of the game has been ratcheted down a notch. The game does have the same number and design of maps as the PC version, but they no longer have a real-world feel about them. No longer can you wonder around and actually believe that someone lived in these environments. The textures seem like they were taken out-of-the box and slapped on. The same can be said about the sound. The effects seem like they were pulled off the main Quake efx sound HDD, and popped into the console edition, unoptimized. Of course this is enough to play an FPS game, but with great-sounding titles like COD4 out there, why not strive for the best? Even the frame rate jerks around at times, mostly when the action gets fairly heated in a multiplayer match, which is exactly when the frame rate should hold up. Coulda, woulda, shouda, folks. That is what comes to mind when I think of Quake Wars on the Xbox360. The game was a solid title on the PC. Unfortunately, there is an inherent flaw in releasing a game like this on the home consoles when quality of the game is at issue. The Quake fans out there that are hardcore enough to want the game on a home video game system have likely already bought and played the heck out of the PC version for months. That leaves those of us who have either not played the PC version because of lack of interest or have not played because of lack of hardware. That, plus those “casual game buyers” among us who are in-store and think the title is interesting enough to warrant a purchase. Unfortunately, neither of the two groups I just mentioned will be likely to plop down almost $70 USD for an FPS game that is released among great games we just spent our hard-earned money on (Ninja Gaiden 2, Metal Gear Solid 4, GRiD racing, and Grand Theft Auto IV). Money is a big issue for gamers these days with the economy the way it is, and Quake Wars suffers badly from a bad timing decision. Id Software should have held the title until about a month after Battlefield BC, which is due in two weeks or so. Then the game might have had a chance. FPS gamers might start to crave a break from their Bad Company-ing at that point, and the single player games I mentioned above are long gone and done with. Unfortunately, with all its technical flaws and content omissions, it is hard to recommend that anyone pay full price for a game that is only about ¾ of its PC counterpart, at best. If you like Quake that much, get this one on PC, and if you do not have a PC, I’m sure you can rent this game somewhere. |
