When Top Spin originally was announced, gamers were happy to have an alternative to Virtua Tennis. The gameplay was similar, but it was refreshing to be playing a totally different tennis video game that also made your thumb feel like it was crushed by an elephant after hours of play. Top Spin 2 provided more of the same, with better presentation and updates graphics and players. Top Spin 3 is here already, and, well, there may be a fly in the ointment, as the saying goes. If you are planning on picking up Top Spin 3, bringing it home, popping it in, and finding your old Top Spin buddy online in order to rock a night of girlfriend-free gaming, think again. Sorry to report, folks, your previous Top Spin tennis experiences and training mean squat. The developer, PAM, has retooled the entire gameplay mechanic of the series, to the point where I actually though my control pad was malfunctioning at first. Along with the complete control re-vamp, Top Spin is really no longer a “pick up and play” title. The game is now entirely based on button timing and court position, and you will be missing many more easy forehand shots than you thought possible, especially if you happen to be distracted. Basically, to put it bluntly, what PAM has done is made Top Spin 3 much closer to a tennis simulator for hardcore tennis gamers, and I do not doubt it will be the favorite of players who have been looking for a real to life tennis game since, well since forever. Do not get me wrong, while I was very annoyed at first that I was going to have to actually pay attention and train in order to play the game, that ire was eventually replaced with respect. Once you start to get things down pat, you will realize that you can actually play well if you “play well.” If you take the time to train, you will be rewarded by beating opponents you thought impossible and taking control of the ball on the court like you never thought possible. Of course, it will always piss you off when you whiff a server and the training audience laughs. |
